Piteå - Sweden

“The experience gained in designing and building of large and advanced technology air-supported balloons, make the textile a valid solution for covering entire football fields.
These projects where the energy efficiency and functionality of the structure are combined with architecture, are a fertile ground for interesting projects by using durable textiles and advanced engineering solutions”.

This is the case of the air-supported balloon built in conjunction with the general contractor OY POLARHALL-SCANDINAVIAN AV for the town of PITEA in Sweden, where we – as Canobbio Textile – built a cover measuring 115 m x 75 m wide to cover the winter playing field of the town’s women’s team which plays in the Swedish premier division.

The seasonal air-supported balloon was made using the double membrane technology: an air chamber with an insulating function was made. This type of cover consists of an outer membrane which is welded at high frequency with an inner membrane. Only the outer one has a static function and therefore absorbs all the forces generated by external loads, such as wind, rain, etc. The inner membrane has the sole function of forming an air chamber for thermal transmittance. Furthermore, 9 cables coated and tensioned above the envelope were used to increase its stability and resistance to snow load and to decrease the weight of the outer membrane, to facilitate the assembly and disassembly operations.
